Chapter 8

The night air whipped across Autumn’s face, though she was too afraid to open her eyes. They were clenched shut, and her jaw was set to keep a scream from escaping her lungs. How she’d been convinced to do something this ridiculous she’d never know.

“Can we slow down?” Autumn shouted to Dean.

She could feel him laughing—her arms were wrapped around his waist, and though at first she felt awkward, she clung to Dean tighter than a baby chimpanzee on its mother’s back. Though she tried to convince herself that she wasn’t enjoying the physical contact, she had smiled slightly as she’d situated herself behind him and they’d taken off. The starry sky that shone overhead only added to the magic.

“We’re only going forty,” he shouted back. “The speed limit is forty-five.”

“When you said you’d give me a ride home, I thought you had a car in mind.”

Another chuckle. Autumn pushed the thought that he had incredible abs out of her mind.

“If you’re a cautious driver, motorcycles can be a safe, reliable, economical way to travel. Besides, you’re the one who said I was too rigid, weren’t you?”

Autumn bit her lip. “I meant in your interpretation of what a full and complete stop meant, not driving a motorized bicycle down a busy street. That’s plain irresponsible.”

“Live a little, Autumn,” Dean answered.

He made a turn, and Autumn gripped a handful of his shirt, willing herself to lean with him though it felt like they were going to tip over and skid the bike down the pavement. Opening her eyes, Autumn was simultaneously relieved and slightly disappointed to see her quiet little apartment complex come into view.

Dean slowly pulled up into a spot near where Autumn had pointed him, killing the rumbling motor and flipping out the kickstand. She swung off the bike and nearly stumbled backward. Her legs trembled and she realized she’d been pinching them together since she’d straddled his Harley Davidson’s seat and they’d pulled out of the restaurant.

Before she could fall, Dean caught her hand. “Steady. You alright?”

“Yeah,” Autumn giggled involuntarily. The rush of adrenaline had made her giddy. “First time on a motorcycle, and it was…surprisingly refreshing.”

Dean’s grin widened, looking rather pleased at her assertion. “Glad you enjoyed yourself. I told you it wouldn’t be so bad.”

Autumn rolled her eyes. “That’s why you wanted to get in a couple of dances in before we left, isn’t it?”

Dean shrugged, looking down at the toe of his boot as he kicked at a tuft of grass. “Made the close contact of our ride home less awkward, didn’t it?”

Autumn agreed with a nod and changed the subject, hoping he wouldn’t notice she hadn’t minded any of it. The walls she’d built around herself because of Jason were still there, but they were crumbling. “So, are you going to report Caiden for scraping up that Corvette?”

“Sure will. I’ll call it in when I get home. There were security cameras on the restaurant roof, and there was definitely some red paint on his bumper, the right height to have pulled it off the Corvette’s door.
